Safety

With its standard Pre-Collision Assist, the Ford F-150 Raptor is better at preventing collisions with pedestrians than the Rivian R1T, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety:

The F-150 Raptor has standard Post Collision Braking, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The R1T doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The F-150 Raptor has standard Reverse Brake Assist that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The R1T doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the F-150 Raptor’s standard Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The R1T doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

Both the F-150 Raptor and R1T have rear cross-traffic warning, but the F-150 Raptor has Cross Traffic Braking (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The R1T’s Rear Cross-Traffic Warning doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the F-150 Raptor and the R1T have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Ford vehicles are better in initial quality than Rivian vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford above average in initial quality. With 87 more problems per 100 vehicles, Rivian is rated below average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Ford vehicles are more reliable than Rivian vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Ford 6 places higher in reliability than Rivian.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the F-150 Raptor’s brake rotors are larger than those on the R1T:

Front Rotors

13.8 inches

13.5 inches

Rear Rotors

13.7 inches

12.9 inches

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the F-150 Raptor has larger standard tires than the R1T (315/70R17 vs. 275/60R20). The F-150 Raptor’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the R1T (37 x 12.5R17 vs. 275/50R22).

The Ford F-150 Raptor’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Rivian R1T only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The F-150 Raptor has a standard full size spare so a flat doesn’t interrupt your work or a trip. A full size spare costs extra on the R1T. Without the option you must depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the F-150 Raptor’s wheelbase is 9.6 inches longer than on the R1T (145.4 inches vs. 135.8 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the F-150 Raptor is 6.3 inches wider in the front and 5.9 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the R1T.

Chassis

The Ford F-150 Raptor may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 1250 to 1400 pounds less than the Rivian R1T.

For excellent aerodynamics, the F-150 Raptor has standard flush composite headlights. The R1T has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

Passenger Space

The F-150 Raptor has 2.5 inches more front legroom, 7.6 inches more front hip room, 6 inches more front shoulder room, .7 inches more rear headroom, 7 inches more rear legroom, 8.4 inches more rear hip room and 6.9 inches more rear shoulder room than the R1T.

Cargo Capacity

The F-150 Raptor’s cargo box is larger than the R1T’s in every dimension:

Max Width

51.1”

Height

The Ford F-150 Raptor has a standard Tailgate Step, which folds out and allows for much easier access to the cargo area. The Rivian R1T doesn’t offer a rear cargo step.

The F-150 Raptor has stake post holes, to allow the containment of tall, light loads. The R1T doesn’t offer stake post holes.

Towing

The F-150 Raptor’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the R1T’s (8200 vs. 7700 pounds).

The F-150 Raptor can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the F-150 Raptor can be unhitched and driven around locally. The R1T can’t be towed flat on the ground.

Ergonomics

The F-150 Raptor has a standard heads-up display that projects speed in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The R1T doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the F-150 Raptor’s available exterior PIN entry system. The R1T doesn’t offer an exterior PIN entry system.

The F-150 Raptor’s standard side window demisters help clear frost or condensation from the side windows in the winter. The R1T doesn’t even offer side window demisters, so the driver may have to wipe the windows from the outside to gain side vision.

The F-150 Raptor’s Park Assist can parallel park by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The R1T doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Recommendations

The Ford F-Series outsold the Rivian R1S/R1T by almost 16 to one during 2023.
